Triathlon Community Suffers a Great Loss

Laura MacKay was a committed athlete and team mate. She lived life to the fullest in her sport endeavors and her optismistic attitude and friendly demeanor is what APTS athletes will remember about her. These were the overwhelming thoughts of those from the Aerobic Power triathlon group who were fortunate enough to have known Laura or trained alongside her. Laura's team mates, and friends were deeply saddened by the news of her untimely passing after a serious bike crash on a slippery descent, while bike training in the Canary Islands last week with her husband and training partner Travis Eltom. We want to extend our deepest condolences to Travis and the MacKay family.

We'll miss Laura as a friend and a friendly competitor.

The family is planning a memorial service for next Sunday, setting a date when Eltom's police squad can attend on their day off.

Cool Your Jets

I have always been a student of Jack Daniels and Greg McMillan, two highly respected run coaches. In particular their high emphasis on tempo run training or threshold training, for intervals upwards of 15, maybe 20 minutes long. I loved it, and when looking at a triathletes schedule and limited to possibly 2 to 3 runs a week you got lots of bang for your buck. They were the toughest workouts I could do because of the duration of the interval and the pace, essentially one's 1 hour race pace. But while I was finding it tough to be mentally and physically ready for this level of workout on a regular basis i was also finding that everything i read in terms of training for runners, would always refer to tempo runs up to 60 minutes long. I would stress over this wondering how whimpy I was because  there's no way I could do this 1 hour race pace for an hour on a weekly or bi weekly schedule. The other problem was, what do you do when you have built up to your broken interval hour at tempo pace but race season still wasn't here yet.

Testimonials

"I wanted to thank my APTS coaches for contributing to my recent success in the Boston Marathon where I ran a PB of 3 hours and 41 minutes. Since joining APTS I have taken 26 minutes off my marathon time while decreasing my number of runs per week. I am a believer and proof that your training plan really works. I am now dedicated to my 3 specific training runs (Tempo, Track & long run) with supplementation of a bike work out or recovery run. I would never have believed that I could increase my speed by so much, let alone run a 3:41 by doing only 3 runs/week. I am so grateful for the coaching and support that I have received from APTS. I could not have gone into my race so well-prepared if it were not for my coaches. In addition to my training plan, you help me plan my nutrition for race day, make a race plan that that allowed for modification based on race day and ensure that I was mentally and physically prepared for a hilly marathon course all so that I could execute my dream race plan. I am still basking in the success of my race.

I am so grateful to Kate, Kevin, Jon and Brian for their belief in me. Anytime that I doubted myself you were all there to tell me I could do it. Thanks for helping me fulfill a life-long dream. I will never forget my Boston experience or the help APTS gave me to get to Boston. You guys are awesome and I look forward to many more years of training together."

A sincerely happy APTS runner
