Why did we run this weeks track session so quick?
Just to bring everyone up to speed, this weeks track session was 2 x (15 x 200m) at zone 3 pace. We would like to hit 8-10km race pace.
I got a few comments that it was quicker then their prescribed zone 3 pace times. The answer is YES it was but its not a big problem.
I think we are quick for a few reasons.
1. We are only on the track once a week and even though it is a tough hour of the day, most are pretty pumped to be there. This "hunger" pushes us to some faster speeds. Not a problem as everyone was very consistent with times. If anything people got quicker throughout the workout which is GREAT!
2. 200m is a short rep. It is only natural for 200m to be looked upon as short and a bit "easier" then the 800m, 1km, etc reps. Again not a problem.
The point of a long workout like todays is to push our aerobic limits and provide litte rest to catch our breath and go again. Like I said today this workout will be done in a months time with less rest instead of more speed.
3. And lastly everyone that is coming out to track is IMPROVING. Every year we have to get comfortable to the track and after that takes place we start to see great benefits.
Good job to the big groups out yesterday and today. That was a very tough workout with 6km of work. Well done.
