On June 18th 2011, Sandy Ayre is hosting a "Yoga for Cyclists" workshop at Lotus Soul Gym in St. Albert from 4:00pm-6:00 pm. The cost is $35.00.
Sandy Ayre a former elite level mountain bike racer, certified yoga instructor and occupational therapist. Combining my knowledge and experience from all 3 areas, I have developed a workshop specifically designed for the unique needs of cyclists.
Cycling places specific demands on the lower body, creating tightness in the legs, hips and lower back. How we are positioned on our bikes puts us at risk for collapsing the shoulders and chest, impairing our ability to breathe deeply. Further, although cycling does not create a strong core, core strength is imperative to maintaining efficient power and strength while cycling. The repetitive, unilateral nature of our sport places significant reliance on the muscles in our lower body, over developing some, and tightening others.
The holistic nature of yoga is the perfect remedy to these cycling specific demands. Yoga for Cyclists will address the legs, hips, lower back, developing core strength and opening the chest and shoulders. By working the body in this way, injuries can be prevented, and cycling can become more comfortable. Meditation, focus, and breathing will also be discussed as to how it can impact and improve your performance on the bike.
