Success on the Jasper Skyline Trail Runs
Written by Kevin Masters Monday, July 26, 2010 08:17 PM
Coming off of a successful day one of the 45 km skyline trail, you always wonder how there could possibly be a successful day 2. But with some solid recovery practices and lots of good food, things can usually workout ok. We were psyched and ready for our second pass of the skyline, in 2 days.
Having completed it in 5 hours total time on day 1, we were hoping to at least equal that, although with tired legs we were hoping that knowing the difficult passes now that we would be able to cover some ground a little quicker on day 2.
Marc was experimenting with shoes and got a little uncomfortable on day 1 but had that fixed up for day 2. I noted in 08 and it still holds true, the most important thing you can do is experiment with shoes and socks. Running with feet wet for 45 km provides a whole different feeling then dry feet for the same flat distance. I think I actually enjoyed day 2 more, it was nice knowing just where that next bend was or the end of the uphill stretch. Day 2 was a little less windy and cloudy, it was absolutely amazing up there, there’s a reason they call it the skyline. Day 2 I thought did go better in the dicey sections but we balanced it out but losing a little time in other areas, but still finishing our day in 5 hours and 20 minutes. I don't think any back to back days are as tough as a double skyline so I think it shows well that we completed 2 relatively evenly timed days. Not sure if they’ll be many more real trail test runs left so we’ll have to learn lots from this past weekend.
We have some poor amateur videos in the video section, www.aerobicpower.com for some shots, one being the “Notch” at 8300 feet.
Every now and then, when I'm not busy working with athletes or taking care of business, I find time to write an article or two about things that are motivating, inspiring, and educating.
